Recognize a Stroke
Act B.E.F.A.S.T.
When stroke strikes, every single minute counts. 1.9 million brain cells die every minute without treatment. The updated BE-FAST acronym adds two critical early warning signs — Balance and Eyes — that can appear before the classic symptoms. Knowing all six could save someone's life — including yours.
Balance
Sudden loss of balance or coordination — stumbling, dizziness, or difficulty walking with no clear cause — can be an early stroke warning sign.
Eyes
Sudden blurred or double vision, or loss of vision in one or both eyes. If they can't see clearly out of nowhere, take it seriously.
Face
Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop or feel numb? An uneven smile is a red flag.
Arms
Ask them to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward or feel weak? Sudden arm weakness is a classic warning sign.
Speech
Ask them to repeat a simple sentence. Is their speech slurred, strange, or hard to understand? Sudden speech problems are serious.
Time
If you observe ANY of these signs, call 911 immediately. Note the time symptoms started — doctors need this to determine treatment options.
Also watch for: BE-FAST catches up to 95% of strokes. The B and E signs are often the earliest — don't ignore sudden balance or vision changes.
